What a scientific week we had this week! We all enjoyed exploring different concepts in Science this week and boy were we busy.
Monday: Parts of the Body
We discussed our different body parts and how they are all connected. Afterwards, we did a neat experiment examining our finger prints. The students learned that everybody's finger prints are different. We also looked to see if we had whorl, arch, or loops in our prints. After lunch, we completed self portraits of us using a tracing of our hands and week. They turned out quite nice.
Tuesday: 5 senses
Today we looked at our 5 senses: seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting, and touching. We went outside to explore our playground using our 4 senses (tasting was appropriate for this activity). The students found all sorts of frogs, bugs, and grasshoppers, and enjoyed catching them to examine them more closely. Our experiment today involved 5 different stations that helped us use our 5 senses.
1) Sound: made Kazoos
2) Taste: Blind taste test of Jelly Beans
3) Smell: Painting with Spices
4) Touch: Playing in various containers filled with sand and other items
5) Seeing: Making sunglasses out of paper and cellophane.
This activity went over really well and the students enjoyed it. After lunch, we went swimming.
Wednesday: Sun and Space
Today we explored our solar system and the sun. We talked about the planets and other things you might find in space. The students watched a video and completed a booklet. Todays experiment involved designing and building a solar oven that was able to cook a s'more. Each groups oven was a slightly different design, but they were all successful in making the marshmallow and chocolate melt. The students really enjoyed eating them too!
Thursday: Inventions
Today we started out the day in the pool, because it was too hot by the afternoon. It is so interesting to watch the girls and boys play. They were in seperate pools, the boys were splashing eachother while the girls were organizing eachother to jump in to the pool all at once. We later discussed inventions, and what an invention was. The students played a guessing game and then build machines out their bodies. It was good day.
Today we talked about states of matter: solid, liquid, and gas. We talked about different examples in our world of each of these states. After recess, we discussed measurements and the importance of following directions. We practiced these skills by making Oobleck. The students using measuring spoons and cups to measure out water and corn starch. Although the recipe the recipe didnt turn out, it was good practice and still very fun. It turned out that I was using Rice Flour instead of Corn Starch. It is a very simple recipes 1 part water and 2 parts corn starch, mix and play. It acts as both a liquid and a solid.
After lunch, the students then each made a bouncy ball, by following a recipe and using accurate measurements. They had a blast making these. Some turned out well while others didnt. We talked about failures and how this is okay and part of learning.

During Recess and Lunch the students loved playing with Lego and dancing to Fight Song.
